Mayor's Message

Hello! Welcome to Shepherdstown’s website. Founded in 1734, Shepherdstown is West Virginia’s oldest town. Situated on the bank of the historic Potomac River, recreational opportunities abound. We are the home of Shepherd University, a premiere institution of higher learning. Our historic town is located within about one hour’s drive from the Baltimore-Washington, D.C. metropolitan area and its’ adjacent airports. Our school system, police force, fire department, and our emergency services are points of pride. The Town has a wonderful museum that showcases exhibitions proving that Shepherdstown is the hub of history in the Shenandoah Valley. In fact, the first rural free delivery of mail took place in Shepherdstown. The mail carriage is in our museum located in the Entler Hotel. The entire town is recognized as a historic district by the WV State Historic Preservation Office. Many of the towns’ residential and commercial structures date from the 18th and 19th century. We protect them fiercely and dedicate ourselves to preserving our history, beautiful architectural heritage and small town atmosphere. These features contribute to our community making it a wonderful place to live and raise a family. We look forward to your visit and hope to see you soon.
